Walking Stance - Gunnun Sogi
The walking stance is the most commonly used stance in Taekwon-Do and is taught as the foundation for balance, power, and correct posture, as described in the Encyclopedia of Taekwon-Do by General Choi Hong Hi. To perform it correctly, the student steps forward so one foot is in front and the other behind, with the feet kept about shoulder width apart to maintain stability. The front knee bends naturally while the back leg remains straight, helping the body stay balanced and strong. Most of the body weight is shared evenly between both legs, which teaches control and prevents leaning or wobbling. The hips and shoulders face forward, encouraging good posture and alignment, while the body stays relaxed but ready to move. This stance helps children learn how to stand correctly, move with confidence, and generate power safely when performing punches and other techniques.
