The Student Oath – A Promise for Life

What is the Student Oath?

The Student Oath is more than a recitation at the start of class—it’s a personal pledge that shapes how every Taekwon-Do practitioner behaves, both on and off the mats. It reflects the moral foundation of the art and serves as a daily reminder that training is not just about physical skills, but also about building character.

“The success of Taekwon-Do is not measured solely by the skill of its practitioners, but by the moral strength they show in life.” - Gral. Choi Hong Hi

The ITF Student Oath

I shall observe the tenets of Taekwon-Do • A commitment to live by the five guiding principles: Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control, and Indomitable Spirit. I shall respect the instructor and seniors • Respect is central in Taekwon-Do. It means listening, following guidance, and valuing the knowledge passed down through generations. I shall never misuse Taekwon-Do • Skills learned in Taekwon-Do are for self-defense, not aggression. Practitioners must act with restraint and responsibility. I shall be a champion of freedom and justice • Students stand against injustice and protect the rights of others, embodying courage and fairness in all actions. I shall build a more peaceful world • The ultimate goal of Taekwon-Do is peace—through discipline, respect, and the development of a strong moral character.

Why the Oath Matters in Training

At Emirates Taekwon-Do, we don’t just say the Oath—we practice it. Children learn to respect their parents, teachers, and peers. Teens develop the confidence to stand up for what’s right. Adults find a moral compass that guides them in leadership, family, and community life. The Oath is recited at the beginning of class to remind students that every punch, kick, and stance should be backed by discipline, respect, and honor.
