The Tenets of Taekwon-Do

What Are the Tenets of Taekwon-Do?

The Tenets of Taekwon-Do are the moral and ethical pillars that guide every practitioner. They are more than just rules for training—they are life values that help students become strong in body, mind, and spirit.

“The success or failure of Taekwon-Do training depends largely on how one observes and implements the Tenets of Taekwon-Do, which should serve as a guide for all serious students of the art.” Gral. Choi Hong Hi

Courtesy (Ye Ui)

Courtesy teaches respect, politeness, and kindness in every interaction. Students are encouraged: 1. To promote the spirit of mutual concessions. 2. To be ashamed of one’s vices, not those of others. 3. To be polite to one another. 4. To encourage justice and humanity. 5. To distinguish instructor from student, senior from junior, elder from younger. 6. To behave according to etiquette. 7. To respect others’ possessions. 8. To handle matters with fairness and sincerity. 9. To refrain from giving or accepting gifts when in doubt.

Integrity (Yom Chi)

Integrity means knowing right from wrong—and having the courage to act accordingly. In Taekwon-Do, it also means being honest in training and life. A lack of integrity can be seen when someone seeks unearned recognition, hides mistakes, or misrepresents their skill.

Perseverance (In Nae)

Perseverance is the determination to achieve goals despite challenges. Students learn that progress comes from steady effort and the refusal to quit, whether mastering a new kick or facing life’s obstacles.

“Patience leads to virtue or merit… One of the most important secrets in becoming a leader of Taekwon-Do is to overcome every difficulty by perseverance.” Encyclopedia of Taekwon-Do

Self-Control (Guk Gi)

Self-control is essential both in sparring and in life. Without it, skill becomes dangerous. It means staying calm under pressure, acting responsibly, and never letting emotions dictate harmful actions.

“The term stronger is the person who wins over oneself rather than someone else.” — Lao-Tzu

Indomitable Spirit (Baekjul Boolgool)

Indomitable Spirit is courage in the face of overwhelming odds. It’s the unshakable belief in standing for what’s right, no matter the challenge—inside or outside the dojang.

“If confronted with injustice, he will deal with the belligerent without fear or hesitation, regardless of who or how many they may be.” Encyclopedia of Taekwon-Do

Why These Tenets Matter for Students

At Emirates Taekwon-Do, we integrate the Tenets into every class. For children, this means learning respect at home and school, building the confidence to speak up, and developing the perseverance to keep trying until they succeed. For teens and adults, it’s a lifelong guide to personal discipline, leadership, and resilience.
