Walking Stance - Gunnun Sogi

When your child practices the walking stance, begin by checking the foot placement. One foot steps forward and the other stays behind, with the distance from the big toe of the front foot to the big toe of the rear foot measuring approximately one and a half shoulder widths. The feet should also be about one shoulder width apart side to side, giving the stance stability. The front knee bends naturally, while the back leg remains straight, helping the child stay balanced and strong. Make sure the body weight is evenly distributed between both legs, so the child does not lean forward or backward. Next, observe the upper body: the hips and shoulders must face fully forward, the back upright, and the head level with the eyes looking straight ahead. Parents should remind their child to stay relaxed rather than stiff while holding the stance firmly. By checking stance length, foot width, knee position, weight balance, and full-facing posture, parents can confidently help their child develop a correct walking stance that supports safe movement, confidence, and proper Taekwon-Do technique.
